FIRE AND FANG

Eva

The ward of magic locked back into place as I entered the forest, the dim light of the rising sun guiding my way.

Bee stood in the center of a small clearing, her arms crossed and her face etched with worry as she paced.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Bee hesitated as she turned to me. “I shouldn’t be involving you with this.”

“And yet here I am.” I threw my hands up, gesturing at my surroundings.

“Look, wolves don’t take kindly to outsiders being privy to pack business, but you’re a demon with… skills that could be of use, and I’m not sure who else to call.”

Bee’s words gave me pause. It was never simple to go against the wishes of those who held significance in your life. Every day, I carried the burden of concealing Abaddon from Hades, a secret that gnawed at my conscience. But there were times when one had to make tough choices to accomplish the mission at hand. I respected Bee because of that, even if she was a beast.

“If you want, I can ensure my presence here is kept secret. Tell me what you need, and I’ll see that it’s done.”

Bee lifted a brow. “How are you going to do that in a territory filled with wolves?”

“I’m a demon mercenary with an affinity for darkness. Trust me, they won’t see a thing.”

Bee regarded me with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity, seemingly gauging the truth behind my words. After a moment, she let out a resigned sigh.

“Fenrir was challenged by another pack member. He had no choice but to accept.”

I waited for a punchline that never came. “And are you calling me here to celebrate?”

Bee shook her head. “We don’t celebrate dominance fights. Either way, Fenrir did prevail, but he’s badly injured and won’t let anyone near him to help him heal.”

“He’s a werewolf, doesn’t he heal on his own?”

“That’s a misconception that you are to never tell another soul.”

I wouldn’t readily commit to such a request for confidentiality, yet I found no personal advantage in exposing it either.

“I’m not a medic, Bee.” I’d considered studying it when I’d been human, but at the time, the thought of blood gave me chills. Internally, I laughed.

Look at me now.

“Maybe not, but you’re not at the mercy of an order. He’s forbidden any pack member from going near him. He locked himself in his room and is refusing aid. All I want you to do is go in, check on him, make sure he’s okay, and come right back out.”

“You don’t want me to help patch him up or stay with him?”

“Absolutely not,” Bee snapped. “Wolves are dangerous, Eva. We’re even worse when we’re injured.”

I swallowed hard, my throat feeling as dry as sandpaper, a painful reminder of the horrors that still haunted my thoughts. Flashes of those final moments of my human life seared through my memory with vivid clarity. I could taste the metallic tang of blood in my mouth as I relived the agonizing ordeal.
